Phrasal Verb: Run out of

Run out of (something)
  • If you run out of something, you have no more of it left.
  • If something runs out, it becomes used up so that there is no more left.


Example 1

"I'm currently doing some video editing, but I'm gonna take a break because I'm running out of energy."

  • Another way of saying this is:

"I'm going to take a break because I'm feeling tired."

  • In this example, "I'm running out of energy" is talking about a process; very close to being completely exhausted but not there yet.


Example 2


"We've run out of milk. Could you get some on your way home?"

  • Another way of saying this is:

"We don't have any milk left. Could you get some on your way home?"

  • In this example, imagine that the husband realized they don't have any milk left at home. His wife was outside, so he called her on the phone and asked her to get some milk on her way home.

More examples:

"They have run out of ideas."

"We're running out of time."

"I ran out of gas just as the car reached the gas station."

"I'm running out of cash."
